A look at our history
Over forty years ago, Rae and Eddie Ballard were inspired by friends in Owensboro to launch a food bank in Hopkins County.
Enlisting help from other community leaders like Barry McGaw, Charlie Ramsey, Bob Stacy, and Scottie McGaw, the Ballards set about making their vision a reality. They called on churches to collect contributions of food and gained the cooperation of Kroger for donations of day-old bread and similar items.
As this enterprise grew, the Food Bank was able to build a small building on the corner of Arch and Franklin Streets. Growth continued, and Christian Food Bank moved to its current home on West Center Street.
We at the food bank are so thankful for the Ballards' vision and for their work to share the love of Jesus through a simple gift of food. We are so blessed to see Mrs. Ballard on her weekly visits to the facility, as she always graces us with kind words of encouragement and a warm smile. What a blessing and example the Ballards are to the community!
